Seattle has more than 1,100 unreinforced masonry buildings the city has flagged as collapse hazards in a major earthquake. It is also an aerospace and technology hub, anchored by Boeing and ringed with corporate campuses. Old brick, precision manufacturing, and fast-moving fit-outs make very different demands, and they share one starting point, a faithful measurement of the building as it stands today.
Documenting unreinforced masonry before a retrofit
Seattle's unreinforced masonry stock is the city's known seismic weak point. In 2024 the city adopted a code that recognizes a voluntary retrofit standard, and a mandatory ordinance remains a longer-term goal tied to funding. So today an owner who wants to strengthen a URM building is doing it voluntarily, and either way the engineering starts with an accurate model of the existing structure, brick walls that are rarely plumb and floors that have moved over a century.
A laser scan captures that building as it truly is. The point cloud drives scan-to-BIM for the retrofit design, and a wall plumbness analysis measures how far the masonry has drifted from vertical, the kind of baseline an engineer wants before and after strengthening work. Because much of this stock is historic, the same capture supports historic preservation scanning when a building's character has to be kept.
Aerospace facilities and tech campus fit-outs
Boeing anchors a deep aerospace supply chain around the region, and the tech employers keep reworking office and lab space across the metro. Both live on tolerance. A tooling bay, a lab, or a fit-out needs the real building, the actual column positions and the actual ceiling space, not the design drawings that stopped being accurate after the first change order.
