The country's busiest data-center corridor is being built on floors that have to be dead flat.
In 2024 Atlanta passed Northern Virginia as the top data-center market in the United States for leasing activity, with more than 2,000 megawatts under construction across the metro. Hyperscalers came for the power, the fiber, and the tax abatements, and some of the region's film studios are being converted to server halls as production spending cooled. All of it lands on a slab, and the slab has to hold precise flatness and a layout that hits the drawings.
Why do data-center fit-outs turn to reality capture?
A server hall is a grid problem. Racks, cable trays, containment aisles, and cooling all have to land on exact centerlines, and a fit-out crew laying that out by tape and chalk on a shell that big loses accuracy fast. A scan of the shell gives the layout team the real building, not the design intent, and that is where robotic layout earns its keep.
We use the point cloud to drive robotic layout for the data-center fit-out, staking the actual coordinates on the actual floor, and we verify the slab with a floor flatness analysis before the racks are set so a wave in the concrete does not throw a whole row. When the base building needs an accurate model to design against, we take the scan to scan-to-BIM.
Studio space, warehouses, and buildings being repositioned
Atlanta spent a decade building soundstages, and as film spend fell some of that footprint is being reworked for data centers and other industrial uses. Converting a building for a new life means knowing exactly what is there first, the column grid, the clear heights, the power and structure, none of which the old drawings show accurately.
A single scan captures the existing building as it stands and becomes accurate building and interior documentation a design team can work from, or a full scan-to-BIM model when the conversion needs one. The same capture serves the metro's constant flow of warehouse and distribution work, where the slab flatness governs whether high racking can go in.
