Few cities stack this many kinds of building on top of each other. When the renovation is heavy enough to need coordinated engineering, that same point cloud becomes a modeled building through scan-to-BIM, so architects and trades work off geometry that matches the field instead of a set of as-designed drawings that never did.

A truck plant runs on parts that hold tolerance.

Toyota builds the Tundra and Tacoma on the South Side, and a plant that size lives and dies on fixtures, tooling, and stamped and machined parts that stay inside spec. Scanning a part and comparing it against the CAD model catches a deviation as color on the surface, which is faster and more complete than a run of hand gauges. That is dimensional inspection, and it applies as much to the tier suppliers around the plant as to the line itself.

The missions are World Heritage. That raises the bar on documentation.

Stone walls raised in the 1700s, worn by three centuries of weather and settling, cannot be documented with a tape and a clipboard. A laser scan records the geometry of a mission wall or a chapel exactly as it survives today, which is what a conservator, a stabilization engineer, or a monitoring program needs to work responsibly on a UNESCO site. That is historic preservation scanning, and it produces a baseline you can measure future movement against.
