Few cities carry two building histories at once the way Pittsburgh does. A hundred year old mill floor gets gutted and reborn as a robotics lab. A hospital tower keeps growing on a campus that never stops running. A river bridge that has carried traffic for generations needs its geometry checked before the next repair. Every one of those jobs starts with knowing exactly what is there, and a laser scan is how you find out down to the millimeter instead of the guess.

Why does a robotics hub need the room measured first?

Carnegie Mellon anchored Pittsburgh's autonomy scene by opening its roughly hundred million dollar Robotics Innovation Center in early 2026 at Hazelwood Green, on the footprint of a former steel mill. It sits inside a metro with more than two hundred fifty technology companies working on robotics and self driving systems. Those companies test mobile robots, arms, and autonomous vehicles against the real geometry of a floor and a bay, and simulated geometry is not good enough when a machine is about to move through the space.

A point cloud gives the lab the actual clearances, the actual column grid, and the actual floor plane. When that capture needs to become a working model for integration or a fit-out drawing set, our scan-to-BIM service turns the cloud into a coordinated model, and our building and interior scanning documents the shell the robots have to live in.

Turning a mill into something new.

Pittsburgh has spent decades converting mill and industrial floors into offices, labs, and mixed-use space. Hazelwood Green is the headline, but the pattern runs across the river valleys. The problem with an old mill is that the drawings, if they exist at all, stopped matching reality sometime around the Truman administration. Steel has been cut, added, and settled. Slabs are out of plane. Nobody knows where the utilities actually run.

Scanning the structure as it stands gives the design team a true starting point instead of a hopeful one. For a building with historic fabric worth keeping, our historic preservation scanning records the character elements at high resolution, and our dimensional inspection checks whether the existing steel and slab sit where the reuse plan assumes they do.

Hospitals that never stop, and bridges that keep aging.

UPMC runs an integrated health system that dominates the region and keeps investing heavily in new clinical space and health technology. Hospital renovations are the hardest kind of construction to document, because the building cannot close and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing above the ceiling is dense and unforgiving. A scan captures all of it in one pass without opening the ceiling, so the design and coordination happen against reality.

Pittsburgh is also a city of rivers, and rivers mean bridges, many of them old and under constant inspection and repair. Capturing a span as a point cloud gives engineers accurate existing geometry to design a repair or replacement against. That same as-built model runs through our scan-to-BIM workflow so the record is something the whole team can build from.
