The Houston Ship Channel is the largest petrochemical complex in the United States, holding roughly forty-two percent of the nation's base petrochemical capacity, with thousands of miles of pipeline tying together around two hundred plants and dozens of new units and expansions in progress. Add the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, and a metro with no zoning where development goes anywhere. Why do plant turnarounds start with a scan?

A plant along the Ship Channel has been modified for decades. Pipe was rerouted, equipment was swapped, and the isometrics on file stopped matching the field years ago. When a turnaround or a tie-in is coming, an engineer who trusts the old drawings finds out during the outage that the new spool does not fit, and every hour of that outage is expensive.

A laser scan captures the unit as it actually stands, dense enough to model pipe, steel, and equipment to real coordinates. That point cloud becomes a scan-to-BIM plant and pipe as-built the engineering team can design tie-ins against with confidence, and where a fabricated component or a critical clearance has to be confirmed, a dimensional inspection checks it against the model before it ships. Fewer surprises, shorter outages, tie-ins that fit the first time. It is the same evidence MEP contractors rely on for congested mechanical work.

The Texas Medical Center and everything above the ceiling

The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, a constant churn of expansion, renovation, and fit-out across dozens of institutions. Renovating clinical and research space means working above ceilings packed with existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, often on floors that stay in use. Guessing at what runs where is how a renovation runs over.

A scan captures those real conditions in one visit and becomes accurate building and interior documentation the design team can build against, taken to a full scan-to-BIM model where the coordination demands it. The trades see the congestion before they open the ceiling.
